My beautiful girls: Mattea,
Arcadia (2), Bayta (new!)
My wife Mattea and I have lived in Corvallis since 2019, are raising two young daughters (so far) here, and are committed to staying as long as we live. The city that future generations inherit will be formed by the trajectory that we choose today, and I care deeply for my family’s sake that we get every single boring but important detail right.
No current councilors have children at home, nor have any recently. I would provide this missing perspective, and also be the only councilor working in a decision-making private-sector role. Combined with my legislative experience as the Vice Chair of the Corvallis Planning Commission, I stand ready to hit the ground running—and help avoid accidental mistakes—during a time of transition: a supermajority of current councilors (either 6 or 7 of 9 total) are retiring this year!
I would consider the upcoming city council term a resounding success if we were able to:
1.Solve our budget gap permanently
The city has a structural budget gap: expenses grow faster than revenue, so we have to hike fees or raise taxes every couple of years just to tread water. I would work to fix our revenue sources properly so that “one-time” patches aren’t chronically necessary.
2.Establish a unified downtown vision
Proposals for City Hall, a police station, Madison Avenue, parking, and a TIF district belong in one conversation. The city needs to decide what we want downtown to be, bring those pieces together in one concrete plan, and then implement it.
3.Unleash the local economy
Corvallis should be a place where high-tech startups can grow into high-paying employers without leaving and where it’s easy for people to spend their money to make our community better. The more investment our town attracts, the more affordable it will be.
If elected, I will focus diligently on these three priorities and resist other major distractions.
